Robert Michael Reimer passed away in New Jersey on June 16, 2018 at the age of 93 from complications of old age.
Born on May 2, 1925 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Bob served as a Clerk in the US Army, then earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University. He went to work for General Electric’s Aircraft Engine Division shortly after graduating, and met his wife Joan Dempsey while employed at GE’s facility in Lynn, Massachusetts.
He was later transferred to GE’s Jet Engine unit in Evandale, Ohio, and made his home in Cincinnati. He earned his Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and held several leadership positions in the Cincinnati chapter of the ASME.
Bob and Joan had five children: Janet Reimer, Carol (Reimer) Goett, Robert J. Reimer, Brian Reimer, and Therese (Reimer) Neis. A devout Catholic, Bob served as the Head Lector at Our Lady of the Rosary parish in Greenhills for many years, and sent all five of his children to Catholic high schools in Cincinnati, and later to the University of Notre Dame.
Bob loved working with his hands. He built furniture and electrical devices as a hobby, and had a remarkable talent for repairing cars. He learned to dance the polka as a child in Wisconsin, and became a square dancing enthusiast after he retired from GE. He was an active member and avid bridge player at the Maple Knoll Village Retirement Center in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, then moved to New Jersey in 2010 to be near his daughter Carol as his health declined.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Joan, and by his late-in-life companion Delores Hageman. He is survived by two brothers – Anton and Louis Reimer; one sister –Anne Gillen; his five children; twelve grandchildren –Jeffrey, David and Katherine Goett; Mercy Hume; Faith and Christopher Bachner-Reimer; Emily, Karen, Laura, and Maria Neis; and Thomas and Joan Reimer; and by his five great-grandchildren – Caroline Hume; Anne and Daniel Reimer; and Maria and Liliana Goett.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am on Friday, June 22, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ. He will be buried in Malden,Massachusetts beside his wife of thirty-four years, Joan.
Donations may be made in Bob’s name to the American Diabetes Association.
