Gus Bruns died on Friday, September 16, at Parker House in Monroe where he had happily spent his last year. Born in New Brunswick in 1927 to Lucy Mulvey and Gustave Bruns, he was the brother of John and Bob. He was raised in Milltown, and educated at New Brunswick High School and Rider College where he received a BS in Business Administration. Gus and Anne Crowley were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Milltown in 1950. He and Anne raised their six children in Somerville. They spent summers in South Seaside Park and retired to Lavallette.
Gus served in the Navy and after the war, worked for J&J in the Personal Products division and RCA/GE. Gus and Anne moved the family to Taipei, Taiwan, for a two year work assignment and later traveled frequently for work and pleasure.
Gus was a devout Catholic who attended Mass daily as a parishioner at Immaculate Conception in Somerville and later at St. Padre Pio in Lavallette. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Immaculata Spartan Club.
His wife Anne, brother Bob, and children Suzi and Sweeney are no longer with us, but celebrating his life and sad at his death are his surviving children Vince Bruns and his bride, Martha Wilson, Cathy Wessel, Patti dePorter, and Eileen Bruns and her wife, Christine Newman; brother John Bruns and his wife, Margaret; grandchildren Ben, Emily, and Sarah Wessel, Janna and Kathleen dePorter; great grandkids Malcolm and Simon. Also grieving are extended family who knew him as MOUG.
Visiting hours will be at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville on Monday September 19th from 2 – 4PM and 6 -8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, September 20th at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville.
In lieu of flowers, please have a gin and tonic or go out to dinner in his honor with someone you love and tell Gus stories.
