​John W. Klar

John W. Klar died September 28 at RWJ at Somerset in Somerville. Son of the late Simon and Frances Klar, Mr. Klar was born in Colden,NY and has been a resident of Somerville since 1968. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in September 1946 and spent four months in Yokohama, Japan and was later Honorably Discharged in 1947. He then attended Sampson College, then transferred to Purdue University in 1950 until the Korean War started. Mr. Klar was drafted again into the Army in September 1950 and spent 18 months in Korea, teaching Communist POW's.

Now, discharged again from active duty and transferred to Army Reserve in 1952, he was able to go back to Purdue on the GI Bill and received a BS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1954 and then a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering in 1956. His engineering career began with Continental Oil Co. in their Process Engineering Department in Ponca City, OK, then onto one of their subsidiary in the Republic of Panama until 1964. In 1968 he moved to Somerville and was employed as a Project Engineer/Manager for Amerada Hess Corporation retiring in 1985.

Although, Mr Klar was an Army Veteran twice, his heart belonged to the Navy. He has had several articles published in Warship International, where his Naval History and warship photos were highlighted. A member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville, The Tin Can Sailors Assoc., the Naval Institute Assoc. and the Tailhook Assoc. were only some of his memberships. His siblings Joseph, George, Martin, Simon, Sr. Frances Klar and Ann Feldman predeceased him.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Lynette, children John Jr., wife Irene, Elizabeth Desch, husband Michael, Robert, wife Michelle and Michael Klar, a sister Mary Kay Butler, grandchildren David, Christopher, Michael, Kathryn, Patrick, Rowan and Eatan and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Monday, October 3, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Interment to follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater. Visiting hours from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Sunday, October 2, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville.

​In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's memory to D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans), Boys Town or the Immaculate Conception Church Campaign for Immaculata High School.
