William A. Jamieson died quietly at home Friday night, surrounded by members of his loving family. He did not “pass on.” As a man with a lifelong love of language, he detested that flaccid aphorism.
Bill cut a wide and deep swath through life.
Born in Newark in 1927 and raised in the Depression he served both in World War II and the brutal combat of the Korean conflict, emerging from all of these challenges with his empathy and sense of humor intact. Back in civilian life, he married Theresa Ann Textor, his lifelong love, and began a career in “The Telephone -” first New Jersey Bell, then AT&T. Terry and Bill settled in Hillsborough where they raised their four children – Kathy, Jeff, Beth, and Chris. Bill became involved in politics, serving first as Township Committeeman, then Police Commissioner, then Mayor. He and Terry were also founding members of the Villagers Theatre in Franklin, where they acted, directed, built sets for, and produced dozens of productions over 30 years.
After retiring as a district manager at AT&T in 1983, Bill channeled his endless energy into diverse activities: buying and refurbishing a commercial building in Metuchen, earning a Master Gardener certificate, becoming a building inspector, and of course spending endless hours with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.
Bill and Terry loved tennis, gardening, travel, and each other until Terry’s passing in 2012. Now they are re-united.
Bill is survived by his children - Kathryn Ormosi, Jeffrey Jamieson, Beth Uporsky, and Chris Jamieson - nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will begin at Noon on Tuesday August 6 at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville and conclude with Military Honors at 2pm at Funeral Home.
