Robert E. Gertsen, “Bob”, 79, of Somerville, died January 16, 2022, at RWJ University Hospital in Somerville.
Born and raised in Bayonne to the late Hilmar and Ada Gertsen (nee Lathers), he went on to meet and marry his dear wife Mary Frances Muirhead in 1965.
Bob and Mary Frances settled in Somerville in 1967 where they raised their five children. He worked as a Plant Manager for Color Guard of Raritan for 30 years. In his retirement, Bob found joy working for Barker Bus as a bus driver and even spent time as a crossing guard.
An avid sports fan, Bob loved his New York Yankees and enjoyed bowling, which is where he met his bride to be. He also had an affinity towards animals, not only the family pets, but any animal that passed through the yard. Animals flocked to him.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Mary Frances Gertsen, and his five children and their families, Marie Ann Phillips (Daniel), Lorraine Gertsen (Jeff), Robert J. Gertsen, Elaine Gertsen (Greg), and Christine Adams (Kevin), grandchildren, Daniel, Moira, Samantha, Tyler, Ryan, Carleigh, Austin, Christien, and Chase, his dear brother James Gertsen, as well as his extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2022, from 1:00 to 5:00PM at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Monday, January 24, 2022, at The Church of the Immaculate Conception, Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home beginning at 9:00AM.
Entombment will follow at Resurrection Burial Park, 899 E Lincoln Ave, Piscataway.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memorial Giving, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
