James Meizanis

Meizanis78, of Somerville peacefully passed away Tuesday, January 08, 2019 in the comfort of his own home.  He was born in Astoria, NY, raised in Wilkes Barre, PA before moving to Somerville, NJ where he met and married his wife, Terry of 53 years.  He worked at Johnson & Johnson for 43years and shortly after retiring worked at Kohl’s for 12 years.  Aside from golfing, Jim adored his wife and truly cherished his family all of whom will miss him dearly.


Jim is survived by his beloved wife Terry, their son Steven with wife Tonya and their daughter Theresa with husband Pete. Also surviving is his brother, Tom and sisters Dot, Marion and Joanne.  He was also the best Pop Pop for his grandchildren, Lyrisa with husband Bobby, Ryan, Kevin, Christopher and PJ.  He is preceded in death by his eldest son, Michael.  

Arrangements are in the care of Cusick Funeral Home on Mountain Ave in Somerville.  Visitation hours will be on Thursday, January 10th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:00am on Friday, January 11th.  

In lieu of flowers, friends and family are requested to make donations to the American Cancer Society in Jim’s name.

Mary Meyer died January 7 at Green Knoll Care Center, Bridgewater. Mrs. Meyer was the daughter of the late John and Alice (Trimmer) Potts. She was born and raised in High Bridge before moving to Somerville and then Bridgewater.

A graduate of Hood College, MD, Mrs. Meyer was employed as a Dental Assistant for 35 years with Dr. Levin of Bridgewater. Surviving are a son David and a cousin Thomas Stover.

​Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Saturday, January 12, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville then followed by interment at the Lower Valley Union Cemetery, Califon.  

Francis Patrick Kedian

Francis Patrick Kedian, age 78, passed away on January 10, 2019, in Ashburn, VA with his wife and children at his bedside.  “Pat,” as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, was born on August 20, 1940, in South Plainfield, NJ to Esther (MacNair) and William Kedian.

Pat obtained his Bachelor’s degree at Montclair State College in New Jersey, where he met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Carden, in a moment both described as love at first sight.  Pat and Mary were married on June 20, 1964 and raised three children in Hillsborough, NJ.  Pat was a gifted teacher and educated students for almost four decades in the Bridgewater-Raritan school district. He received numerous accolades over the years for his work in the classroom.  Pat passionately pursued his hobbies of photography and poetry throughout his life, and enjoyed sharing his photographs and poems with family and friends.  He was a lifelong baseball fan, rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers in his childhood and then the New York Mets as an adult.  

Pat is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary; a son, Patrick Kedian, of New York, NY; a daughter, Katie Kedian, son-in-law, Matt Cohen, and three grandsons, Conor, Ryan, and Jake Cohen, all of Arlington, VA; a daughter, Kerry Suter, son-in-law, Steve Suter, and two granddaughters, Clare and Tara Suter, all of Sammamish, WA; and a sister-in-law, Judy Carden, of Los Angeles, CA.  

A celebration of life will be held at Cusick Funeral Home
, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 3:00-5:00 pm.

Gregory "Greg" Jackson died January 8. He was born and raised in Somerville and resided in Somerset before moving to Branchburg recently. Greg retired in 2012 as the Assistant Athletic Director at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC). He was employed at the College for 35 years.

Surviving are his wife Terri Lynne Taylor-Jackson, his son James, his wife Norma and 2 grandchildren, Noah and Malcolm and 2 brothers Wayne, his wife Faith and Elmer.

​Visiting will begin 10am on Thursday, January 17, at St. Thomas AME Zion Church, Davenport St., Somerville and conclude with a Funeral Service at 11. Interment to follow at New Cemetery, Somerville.

Rose Tozzi peacefully passed away January 13 surrounded by her family. Rose was predeceased by her husband John "Sonny" Tozzi in 2005. A loving and caring mom, wife, grandmother and great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many who loved spending time with her family, cooking, gardening and golf. She was the daughter of the late Anthony Sr. and Anna Orlando of Raritan who owned and operated Orlando's Restaurant where Rose worked together with her family doing many jobs including cooking and serving but most importantly packing and shipping food to our servicemen during the war. Rose will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Surviving are her sons, Nick and his wife Jane, Jeff,  Donald and his wife Carrie, her grandchildren, Nick Jr, Jessie and Jennifer and six great grandchildren Jimmy, Alexa, Jake, Jett, Nicky III and Christian. Also surviving are her sisters Ann Schaub, Joan Peardon her husband Jack, Trina Dumont her husband Bill, Theresa Padovani her husband Enzo and brother Matthew DeCastro. Her siblings Catherine, Mary, Tessy, Anthony Jr., Matthew, Alfred ("Butts"), Joseph and William predeceased her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Friday, January 18, for Rose at St. Ann's Church, 45 Anderson St., Raritan. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908

Brian David  Hurling

Brian David Hurling passed away on January 11, 2019. He was 57 years old.

Brian was born in Somerville, NJ on December 17, 1961 to Mabel (Field) Swan and the late Samuel Wayne Hurling Sr.

He was raised in Somerville where he attended Somerville Public Schools, and graduated in 1979. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He completed his basic training at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois. He was then stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California. After completing active duty he remained a resident of the state of California for years until returning to his home state of New Jersey.

Brian was a beloved and highly respected employee of New Jersey Electric Motors Inc. for 30 years.  He was very committed to his job, their clients, and valued his workplace family.

Brian was a ray of sunshine that positively influenced many in all walks of life. He had a passion for living, loving, and enjoying life.  He was an avid lover of sports, specifically the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Cincinnati Reds.  He also enjoyed being active outdoors with things such as fishing, kayaking, biking and coaching Little League Baseball.  Many of you have probably encountered him taking his daily walks through the streets of Somerville. Brian had a deep appreciation for music and delighted in a good conversation.  One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his father Samuel Wayne Hurling Sr. He is survived by his mother Mabel Swan, his children Gabriell and Angelo,  his siblings Jeff, Sam, Oma (husband Randall), and Corby, his special friend and companion Jill,  and a host of family, friends, and love ones.
 
Services will be held at St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church, 75 Davenport Street, Somerville, NJ.

Her grandchildren Kelly, Nicole, Michael, Tara, Erin, Danielle, Emma and Joseph. Her great grandchildren Kaelynn and Justin. Her sister, Marilyn Voorhies and sister in law Rose Marie Spaeth. Anna Charnuska, wife of the late Alexander Charnuska (2000), died January 19. Born in Alden, PA, Mrs. Charnuska resided in Somerville since 1939. She was a Nurse's Aide at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville in the 1930s and 40s. A member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Hillsborough, the Fraternal  Order of Eagles Aerie #2137 of Bridgewater where she served on various charitable committees and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed. Surviving are her sons John and Andrew, her grandchildren Jennifer, David and Kimberly and siblings Emily, Olga and Andrew. Visiting hours from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Wednesday, January 23, Parastas at 7pm at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. Funeral of Divine Liturgy 10am on Thursday, January 24, at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, 1900 Brooks Blvd., Hillsborough. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Manville.

John J. (Jack) Redmond

John J. (Jack) Redmond, 84, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2019 surrounded by his loving family members.  He was born on May 19, 1934 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to John W. and Marion Redmond.
Jack grew up in New Brunswick and attended St. Peters High School there, graduating in 1951.  After graduation, he studied and joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local #9 in New Brunswick where he spent 50 years as an active member and board member.  He was the Local 9 Secretary for many years.

Jack married Dorothy Ann Sheenan in June, 1956.  Soon after Jack & Dot married, Jack joined the United States Army and served for two separate tours. Jack was stationed in both Anchorage Alaska and Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  In 1969, Jack and Dorothy moved to their home that Jack so proudly built himself in Bridgewater, New Jersey.  Jack was very active in the community as well as with Immaculate Conception School, Immaculata High School and Immaculate Conception Parish activities for decades. 

Jack was an active member of the Somerset County St Patrick Division of Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Organization.  He served multiple terms on the AOH board and was honored to be a part of the St Patrick’s Day Parade committee.  Jack was also very active serving the community through outreach programs including SHIP (Samaritan Homeless Interim Program) Soup Kitchen where he often volunteered.   

Jack and his wife Dorothy were happily married for 58 years.  He very much enjoyed his seven grandchildren, and loved attending their various activities. Jack loved traveling, taking cruises, he enjoyed the beach, the company of friends, making Irish Coffees and giving back to the community.

Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and his parents, John and Marion Redmond.   
Jack is survived by his son, James, his daughter, Janet Patullo and her husband, Dennis his son, John and his wife, Peggy and his son, Michael and his wife,Ann-Marie  
Jack was the proud “Pop” to seven grandchildren, Brendan Williams, Meghan, Katie and Erin Redmond  and Anna, Michael and Caitlyn Redmond.

Visiting hours from 3 - 5 pm and 6 - 9 pm on Thursday, January 24, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception RC Church in Somerville at 10 am on Friday January 25th. Mausoleum entombment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway followed by a repast at the Somerville Elks.  

Jack was involved with the Patrick’s Pals Foundation, which benefits children with multiple disabilities.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Patrick’s Pals Foundation at P.O. Box 942, Whitehouse Station, NJ, 08889.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Mohamad Cherry and his extended staff at Atlantic Healthcare, Morristown Memorial Hospital.  Their dedication, care and support have been remarkable to Jack and his family.
 

​William R. Stabile Sr.

William "Bill" R. Stabile Sr. died January 22 at home with his wife of 64 years, Shirley by his side. He was a life long resident of Somerville. Mr. Stabile owned and operated Price Auto Wreckers of Bridgewater from 1971 until his retirement in 2014. A 1949 graduate of Somerville High School who married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Bonetti.

Mr. Stabile was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville and the Somerville Elks Lodge #1068. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. If you never had the opportunity to meet "Bill", you were the unfortunate one. A quiet demeanor, a wide smile, a hearty laugh but most of all a gentleman to friends old and young. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Surviving are his wife Shirley, his sons Bill Jr his wife Dawn and Steven his wife Carolyn, his grandchildren Bill III and Lauren and a sister Vivian Flower. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am on Thursday, January 31, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill's memory to the Adult Day Center of Somerset County, 872 East Main St., Bridgewater, NJ 08876.

Helmuth Karl Neidlein, husband of the late Helen Neidlein who died in 2004, died January 30. He was born in Sauleau, Germany came to  America at the age of 2 and resided in Bridgewater most of his life. Dr. Neidlein received his PhD in Education from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 1982, his BA degree in 1957 in Chemistry, MBA degree 1967 and Masters degree in Economics in 1973 from Rutgers as well. 

Before beginning his academic career as a Professor of Economics at Rutgers for many years and his induction into The International Honor Society in Education, he was a Navy Veteran of WW II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Schroeder. Surviving are a nephew Gary Whitman of Kyle, TX.

Visiting hours from 5pm-8pm on Monday, February 4, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. Funeral Service 11am on Tuesday, February 5, at the funeral home followed by a mausoleum entombment at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.

Robert M. Graham

Robert M. Graham died February 1. Mr. Graham was born in New York, NY and resided in Lebanon for 25 years. He was an attorney and practice law for more than 30 years. An Army Veteran of WW II, he fought bravely in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign where he was awarded the Purple Hear and 1 Service Star.

​Surviving are his wife Kathy (Kendra) Graham and nieces and nephews Cathy Anthony, Ronnie Zimmerman, Barry Zawell, Ilyane Sheinman and Steve Zawell.

Theresa B. (Gatarz) Sweeney, 88, died, Tuesday, February 12th, at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick. 
Born in East Brunswick, Theresa graduated from South River High School, before marrying the love of her life and residing in Bridgewater for about the last 68 years. After sending her children to college, she went back to school and obtained a degree from Somerset County College. Theresa worked in the Bridgewater-Raritan School system for 31 years, most recently helping children with their future college & career selections in the Careers Resource Center. She received numerous awards for Outstanding Achievement issued by the school system 
During her free time, she enjoy gardening and the company of her dogs. 
She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph A. Sweeney Jr. and devoted mother of sons Joseph, Clark, Kevin, and Tim and daughter Barbara and daughter-in-laws, Janet & Penny. She was grandmother to Joseph, Lauren, Casey, Connor, & Patrick and great-grandmother to Amelia & Anne. 
She is predeceased by her parents, Theofil and Mary; brothers, Paul, Frank Alexander, Ted, Chester, John, Stanley & infant Joseph and sisters, Annie (Sister Hortense), Veronica, Rose, Ann, & infant Mary. 
Visitation will be from 2-4pm & 7-9pm on Friday, February 15, at the Cusick Funeral Home at 80 Mountain Ave, Somerville, NJ. A  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30am on Saturday, February 16, at Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville. Geraldine "Gerri" Beyfuss

Geraldine “Gerri” Beyfuss passed away unexpectedly on February 12, 2019 at the age of 74. 

Gerri is predeceased by her parents Antonio and Carmen Uranga. She is survived by her loving sister Lucille Locke, her son Andrew Beyfuss and Christine McGinn Conklin, her son Michael Beyfuss and his wife Andrea Beyfuss.  She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Victoria, Kristina and Alexsandra

Gerri was born on Staten Island, NY on June 24, 1944. She earned her undergrad and graduate degrees from Wagner Collegefollowed by a distinguished teaching career.  She retired in 2010 from Immaculata High School, where she was known as “Senora Beyfuss”.  She was a passionate educator and was adored by her students far and wide.

Gerri loved spending time with her best friend, Mary Rose Neffplaying Scrabble and visiting the beach.  She could often be found treasure-hunting at garage sales, cheering on the Mets or enjoying a boxing match. Her granddaughters always looked forward to her visits, her “grandma pasta” and her Spanish chicken and rice.

Visitation will be held from 2-4pm & 7-9pm on Monday, February 18 at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ.

Steven P. Oller

Steven P. Oller, son of the late James and Patricia Oller, died suddenly on February 12. Steven was born in Somerville and lived there before moving to Middlesex recently. He began his career as a carpenter for Somerville Local Union #455 more than 30 years ago and worked primarily with Durrant Construction of Somerville. A 1985 graduate of Somerville High School where one of his most memorable times was as a member of the 1984 "undefeated football team at the "Ville".

Steven was a member of the Raritan Moose Lodge and the American Legion Post 327 of Bradley Gardens and enjoyed golfing, NASCAR but most of all spending time with his family.

Surviving are his son Mitchell, his daughter Hannah and their mother Jackie, his siblings Jay, his wife Annie, Darren, Susan and so many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours from 5pm-9pm on Tuesday, February 19, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A time for Shared Memories of Steven from family and friends will begin at 8:15pm and conclude with a final Prayer Service at 9pm also on Tuesday evening.

William D. Miller

William D. Miller passed away at Morristown Medical Center on Wednesday, February 13 after a brief illness. A graduate of Villanova University, he was a lifelong resident of New Jersey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville.

Mr. Miller was the loving brother of the deceased Margaret and is survived by his sisters Kathleen of Somerville and Frances of Massachusetts. He also leaves behind nieces and nephew Mary and Ann of Massachusetts and Bill of North Carolina and several grand nephews and a grand niece.

​Visiting hours from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, February 17, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Monday, February 18 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Interment to follow at church cemetery.

Jack Daniel Peardon, 84, of Bound Brook passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 16, 2019. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Joan A. (Orlando) Peardon. His daughter, Catherine Diamente of Bound Brook, son Jack Peardon Jr. of Bound Brook and fiance Beverly Kinney, daughter, Carolyn Peardon and fiance Guy Rucki of Somerset. Grandchildren, Kristen Diamente, Thomas Diamente, Christopher Woehrel and Caitlin Clifford. Great Grand daughter, Freyja Karmol-Diamente.

A private family service will be held at St. Bernard's cemetery in Bridgewater 

​Geraldine "Gerri" Urbanski

Geraldine "Gerri" Urbanski, wife of the late Andrew (Andy) Urbanski, died February 17 at RWJ at Somerset in Somerville. Mrs. Urbanski was born in Detroit, Michigan and has been a resident of Somerville for over 50 years. She was a former assembly worker for Red Fern Lace Works in Somerville.

Her siblings Patricia Painter and John Starycki predeceased her. Surviving are her sister, Vera Smith of Hillsborough and many nieces and nephews.

​Visitation will begin at 11am on Saturday, February 23, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville and conclude with a Funeral Service at Noon at the funeral home. Interment to follow at the Neshanic Cemetery in Hillsborough.  

John A. (Jack) Rice

John A. (Jack) Rice, 85, passed away peacefully at home on Feb 19, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.  He was born July 20, 1933 in New York to John V. and Julia Rice.
 
Jack grew up in Flushing, NY and graduated from St. Anne’s Academy and Fordham University.  Jack met his “bride”, Margie Noonan, while at Fordham.  He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1955.  Jack and Margie married on Dec 26, 1955.  He reported to duty two weeks later.  He received his commission of Lieutenant in Quantico, VA and finished his military career in Camp Lejeune, NC in 1959 as a 1st Lieutenant. 
 
Jack and Margie moved to Astoria, NY and had three children before moving to Levittown Long Island where they had one more child.  Their last move was to Somerville, NJ in 1965 and had their last two children. 
 
Jack’s career in Human Resources / Personnel was with United Parcel Service, the J&J family of companies, AtoChem, M&T Chemicals, and Bridgewater Township.  He retired in 2002.
 
Jack’s faith in God was always at the forefront of his life.  He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church where he was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, past president of the Holy Name Society, CCD teacher, and served on Pre-Cana.
 
Jack’s love of the US Marine Corps continued through his life.  He was a past commandant of the Marine Corps League, John Basilone Detachment of the Marine Corps League & was a member of the John Basilone parade committee.  Very fittingly, Jack passed on the 74th anniversary of John Basilone’s death. 
 
He was actively involved with his community of Somerville and Somerset County.  He belonged to Knights of Columbus, the 200 Club of Somerset County, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and Somerville Elks.  He volunteered for SHIP through the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.  He served on the Somerville Board of Education and coached Somerville Little League and CYO Basketball.  Jack was an avid supporter of all things for Immaculata High School and the Spartan Club.  He was one of the original announcers of the Immaculata High School Spartan football games. 
 
Jack always had time to help, especially for every member of his family.  One his favorite sayings “God first, then his bride, then his children”.  His children included Eileen Engleman (Mark Hess), Kathy Sloan (Hugh), Jack Rice (Sherry), Tim Rice (Caroline), Patti Rice-Drake (fiancé, Bob Belmont) and Tommy Rice (Melissa).  Grandchildren Meredith, Kelly, Alli, Jack, Caitlin, Kristen, Kerry, Megan, Stacey, Jimmy, Timmy, Joey, Maggie, Billy, Jordan, Tommy, Shannon, and Lindsey.  His great grandchildren are Tyler, Hunter, Carolina, Bella, Cade, Savannah, and Hailey, and his sister Regina McNulty (Gene).  He is pre-deceased by his parents John and Julia Rice and his sister Eleanor Rice. 
 
Viewing hours at Cusick Funeral Home on Friday, Feb 22 from 2-4pm and 6-9pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ on Saturday Feb 23rd at 9:30am.

Carol Ann Purtell, wife of the late Thomas Purtell (2011) died February 22 in Mendham, NJ. Mrs. Purtell was born in Marlboro and graduated from Marlboro High School in 1953 and was a member of St. Mary's Church there. She moved to Newburgh, NY in 1957 where she was a member of St.Patrick's Church until moving to New Jersey in 1973.. Her employment in New Jersey was as a credit department employee for Phillips VanHusen in Bridgewater.

Surviving are her son Thomas Patrick Purtell and her daughter Linda Carol Purtell, a granddaughter Ashley Nicole Purtell and a brother Ronald Casscles. Her brother Joseph Casscles predeceased her. 

Visiting hours on Monday, February 25, from 5pm-8pm at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Tuesday, February 26, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ. Interment to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh, NY at 12:30pm.
