On Thursday, September 27, 2019, Ilona Kahl, loving wife and mother of three children, passed away at age 70.

Ilona was born on January 11, 1949, in Rushden, UK, to Nonna and Francis John Bull.  The family emigrated to and settled in Pennsylvania.  She worked in the airline industry for over 25 years as a flight attendant for Eastern and Kiwi Airlines.  For the past 19 years, Ilona was an office administrator at Branch Environment Corp. in Branchburg NJ.

Ilona had a passion for bringing people together and delighted in making everyone feel welcomed, accepted, and supported; she was an unconditional lover and giver, and a tireless party organizer.  Ilona always smiled with genuine love and happiness and was a beautiful light in the lives she touched.  
 
Ilona was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, mother Nonna, and her father Francis John.  She is survived by her three children, Jonathan, Jennie, and Zachary, her grandchildren Jude, Callen, and Sage, her sister Yvonne, and her brothers Frank and Peter.  All of these she loved and touched deeply.  
 
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the Martinsville Fire Department Station #1 (1920 Washington Valley Road, Martinsville NJ 08836), at noon.  Cards and flowers may be sent to 1026 Lakeview Drive, Basking Ridge NJ 07920. 

Evelyn Schweitzer

Evelyn A. Schweitzer (nee Demko), 99, died October 17. She was born in Raritan and was a life long resident. During WW II, Evelyn worked as a guard at the GSA Depot (General Services Administration) in Hillsborough and later as a telephone operator for American Cyanamid, Bridgewater where she met her husband, Albert Schweitzer. Albert predeceased her in 1988 after 28 years of marriage.  Evelyn was very active in St. Joseph's Church in Raritan, where she could be seen talking to her friends outside the church after daily Mass. Active also with the Church's Altar Rosary Society, Food Bank, Adult Choir and Ladies Jenota. Her other memberships included the Raritan Democratic Party, Raritan Senior Citizens and the Raritan Valley Slavic Culture and Heritage Society. If she had any spare time left, Evelyn would enjoy gardening and planting flowers at her home on Elmer Street. She is survived by several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. Visitation from 9am till 10:30am on Monday, October 21, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated also on Monday 11am at the St. Joseph Church, 16 E. Somerset St., Raritan. Interment to follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.

Mary F Ruckstuhl passed away peacefully at home on Sunday October 13th surrounded by her family. Her husband Ernest predeceased her in 2008 after 55 years of marriage Mary and Ernie had an amazing life together ,They enjoyed entertaining their friends at their home and around the pool and traveled all over the world. She also had a very fulfilling career as a nurse in the operating room, a visiting nurse, a nurse educator and a college professor. She was also instrumental in getting the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset County started. Visitation will begin at 9am on Saturday the 19th at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somervillefollowed by a Graveside  Service at 11am at the Neshanic Cemetery 688 Amwell Road, Hillsborough. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Association of Morristown

Anna May Grasso, 92, wife of 54 years to the late Austin Grasso, died October 23 at home. Mrs. Grasso was born in West Amwell,resided in Bridgewater and has been a resident of Raritan since 1960. She was a member of St. Ann Church in Raritan for many years. Surviving are her children Linda Rosa (husband Richard), Steve Grasso and Gary Grasso. Her grandchildren Richard,Thomas, Marc, Steve and Bethany and her great grandchildren Samantha, Gabriella, Andrew, Edward, Ashlyn and Brenton. Visiting hours from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, October 27, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am on Monday, October 28, at St. Ann Church, 45 Anderson St., Raritan. Interment to follow at Highland Cemetery in Hopewell.

Louis E. Grizzard

Louis E. Grizzard, age 86 died on October 24th, 2019.  Louis was born and raised in Washington, North Carolina the son of Joseph Grizzard and Hilda Paul Grizzard.  He moved to New Jersey in 1955 where he married Georgia Dixon. Louis worked in manufacturing plants until his retirement.  Louis is an Army Veteran of the Korean War and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 12 in Somerville NJ.  Louis is affectionately known by fellow veterans in both Middlesex and Somerville as “The Reb”.    

​Louis is predeceased by his wife Georgia Grizzard and his oldest son Jeffrey Dixon. Louis is
survived by daughter Deborah
 DiLonardo and husband Michael, son Louis Grizzard Jr and wife Barbara, son Randy Grizzardhis daughter-in-law Nora Dixon, his sister Patricia Hart10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Louis will be remembered by many for his southern manner and traditions and love for family.  

​Visitation with family and friends will take place at the American Legion Post 12, 232 Union Ave. in Somerville
 at 11:00 am on Wednesday October 30th followed by a Memorial Service at 12:00 pm (Noon) and concluding with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Legion Post 12 in Somerville, NJ.

Loretta Hoffman, 69, died October 24,at RWJ at Somerset in Somerville. Mrs. Hoffman was born in Cleveland, OH and resided in Middlesex since 1961. She retired in 2017 as the office manager for Access Self Storage, Manville.

​Surviving are her husband William (Bill) Hoffman, her aunts Georgia Bryant and Juanita Buchanan and her niece Jennifer Smith. Funeral Services are private.

Frank B. McHugh

Frank B. McHugh, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2019.  Born in Somerville, NJ on September 27, 1933, he was a lifelong resident of the Flagtown section of Hillsborough, NJ.  He graduated Somerville High School in 1951, served in the United States Navy for four years, and worked for NJ Bell until retiring in 1988.  

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Irene; four children: Michael, James and wife Lori, Kathleen and husband Russell, Peter and wife Cynthia.  Also surviving is a sister Anne (McHugh) McCray and many nieces and nephews.  Frank was predeceased by two grandchildren, Alyssa Rose McHugh and Anthony “Tony” Brandariz and surviving grandchildren: Daniel, Matthew, Frank, Alaina, Peter, Nicklaus, Kaylyn and Talia.  

A Memorial Mass will be held at Mary Mother of God Church Hillsborough on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 11am.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to Ronald McDonald House, Philadelphia or St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.

Marion “Mae” Ransone, age 94, passed away November 1, 2019 at the Eastern Star Home in Bridgewater, NJ.  She was born in Somerville, the last of 7 children raised in the Green Knoll section of Bridgewater.  The daughter of Theodore H. and Emma Buchman Kopf, she is predeceased by her first husband, Willis R. Brown, second husband, Robert G. Ransone, Jr., son Glenn F. Brown and grandson Raymond W. Brown.  She was a Gold Star Wife, widowed at 26 with three young children.  She was employed with the Somerset Co. Clerk’s Office and Somerset Co. Sheriff’s Office, where she served three sheriffs.  She retired in 1988 and moved to Jupiter, Florida, returning to Bridgewater in 2018.  Mae will be remembered for her determination and fun-loving personality.  Surviving are son Raymond A. Brown and wife Roseann of Bridgewater, daughter Cheryl Weeks of Hunterdon County, step-son Robert G. Ransone III of Hillsborough, grandson Christopher Weeks of Florida and granddaughter Jennifer Weeks of Pennsylvania. A memorial visitation will be held at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ on, Saturday, November 16, from12 noon to 2:00 pm.  Private burial will follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Somerset Area Regional Animal Shelter (srasnj.org).

Lillian I. Paternoster, 95, wife of the late Dominick Paternoster, died November 3, 2019. Mrs. Paternoster was born in New York City and moved to Raritan in 1945 and resided there until 1987. She lived in Somerville before moving to live with her son, John, two years. ago. A seamstress by trade, Mrs. Paternoster worked in the garment industry for many years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Surviving are hers sons John and Dominick and her daughter Ginger. 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Saturday, November 9, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Interment to follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater. Visiting hours on Friday, November 8, from 3-5pm to 7-9pm at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville

Jane Ann Tosco

Jane Ann Tosco, age 93, of Union Township, NJ passed away on November 6th, 2019.  She was born in Manville, NJ on September 24th in 1926 to parents Yolando (Elena) and Thomas Scannicchio of Manville, NJ. She attended Bound Brook High School and later went onto graduate from the Drake Business Schooin June 1943.  Afterward, she attended Rider University where she graduated at age 19 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education on August 1946.
In June 1954, Jane married John C. Tosco Sr. and settled in Somerville where they resided for 34 years. In December 1955, Son John C. Tosco Jr. was born and later son Thomas Tosco in May 1957.
With a passion for academia and education, Jane’s many years of teaching included:  St. Peters High School – New Brunswick, Robert Morris School – So. Bound Brook, Manville High School and Alexander Batcho School.  In 1987, Jane formerly retired from teaching where she received accolades from Governor Thomas Kean, State Senator’s Frank Lautenberg and Bill Bradley for her years of dedication and service in the profession.
In 1988, both Jane and John Tosco Sr. relocated to Hampton, NJ where they built a new home in the country setting. John Sr., later passed away in January 1990 but Jane resided there until October of this year
Jane is survived by one son Thomas Tosco of Flemington, daughter-in-law Barbara Tosco of Hampton, three grandchildren: John Tosco III and wife Brittany Tosco of Hampton, Stephen Tosco of Charlotte, NC, and Rebecca Tosco of Flemington, NJ. This in addition to one great grandchild, Syrena Tosco of Hampton. Her siblings include sister Emma Hessenthaler of Bridgewater, NJ, and brother Thomas Scannicchio of Tyler, Texas. Husband John C. Tosco, Sr. predeceased Jane in Jan. 1990, and Son John C. Tosco, Jr. passed on Easter Sunday, 2019.
Jane was an intelligent, strong, and independent woman who was still incredibly sharp throughout her final years. Still after retirement, she enjoyed reading and stayed up to date on current events and politics. She continued to garden, do her own yardwork, and even babysat, her great grandchild, Syrena until June of this year. Most importantly, she taught us the value of the family bond, and although she will be missed deeply, her spirit and love for the family will always live on. 
Visiting hours will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 13th between the hours of 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave, Somerville, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, Nov. 14th at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, 315 Old Allerton Road, Annandale, NJ and later burial at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Union Ave, (US Rte. 28), Somerville, NJ.

Theodore Ficarra Jr.

Theodore Ficarra Jr., age 66, passed away November 11th, 2019 at RWJ University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, NJ. Teddy was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ the son of Theodore Ficarra and Rose (Scozzafava) Ficarra. Teddy resided in Somerville and Kendall Park, NJ before retiring from Lucent Technologies to Wilmington, NC before getting sick. For the last 4 years he has resided at Somerset Woods Rehab and Nursing Center in Somerset, NJ to be close to his daughter and son in-law. His hobbies included bowling, fishing and collecting American Eagle pieces of art, statues and memorabilia.

Teddy is predeceased by his wife Sandi Ficarra and his son Vincent Ficarra. Teddy is survived by his daughter Stacey Harper, her husband Jon and granddaughter Brooke along with his siblings Sophie Merunka, Dorlores Murray and Salvatore Ficarra and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family and friends will take place on Friday, November 15th, 2019 from 6pm – 9pm at Cusick Funeral Home in Somerville. A Prayer at 9pm on Friday evening will conclude the services. 


​Anita T. Madison

​Anita T. Madison, age 85, of Bridgewater passed away at Care One of Hanover Township (NJ) Rehabilitation Center on Sunday, November 10, 2019.  Anita was born in Goeppingen, Gemany on September 27, 1934 to parents: Sophie (Feldhauer) and Johannes Ringler.  She came to the United States in 1955 as a bride of her first husband, Lawrence Paul, with their son, Michael.

​Anita worked as a Secretary at Mack Trucks for 32 years in Plainfield, Bridgewater and Somerset before retiring in 1992. She married James Madison in 1981 and resided in Bridgewater. Her son, Michael Paul, of Bridgewater, survives Anita. She was a loving, friendly and compassionate person who is going to be missed.

Visiting hours are from 3:00-5:00 PM on Sunday, November 17, and Monday, November 18 at 9:00 AM, concluding with memories and prayer at 10:00 AM at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somerville, followed by an interment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge.

​Louis Palazzo, 92, died on November 26, 2019.  He was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 29, 1927 to his parents, Zgarrzio Palazzo and Filippa Leoverde.  Louie was a Machine Operator for Johns Manville in Manville and a Taxi Driver for SkyView Taxi in Somerville.  He enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City and the Horse Track with his family.  Louie was full of life and was kind, caring, generous, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
 
Louie is survived by his loving sons, Louis Palazzo and wife, Darlene of Three Bridges NJ and Joseph Palazzo of Raritan NJ; two wonderful grandchildren, Darla Foreman of Pittstown NJ and Michael Palazzo of Manville NJ; three amazing great-grandchildren, Sam, Maya, and Jack; several remarkable nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and three dear sisters-in-laws, Rose Gulick of Bridgewater NJ, Ruth Gulick of Easton PA, and Helen Krause of Raritan NJ.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Palazzo; his parents; and several brothers, sisters, brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws.
 
Viewing will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2019, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ 08876, (908-725-4100).  Burial is private.

Bonnie S. DiPaolo, 63, died November 21. Mrs. DiPaolo was born in Philipsburg, PA and resided in Bridgewater for 20 years. She along with her husband, Dennis, owned and operated American Taxi in Somerville. Surviving are her husband, Dennis, her children April, Kelly, Erika and Kenny, her grandchildren Donnie Ray, Sonja and Dennis,her mother Pat Kephart and stepfather Kenny Kephart and stepbrother David. Charles David Ruff

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charles David Ruff, 84, of Somerville, NJ. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on December 7 at United Reformed Church in Somerville. 

Charles David Ruff (Dave), son of Josephine and Lowell H. Ruff, was born on October 21, 1935, the youngest of three children, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Dave graduated from North High School in 1953, then studied chemical engineering and earned his degree from Ohio State University in 1958. He served the US Army in Baltimore and was honorably discharged. Dave began his career in chemical engineering in Newark, Ohio, then moved to New Jersey and worked in air pollution control for Johns Manville in Manville, Davis Industrial in Newark, Rhodia in New Brunswick, and Recon Systems in Three Bridges. After marrying Pat Krumme in 1958, they raised three children, Judith, Philip, and Karen, in Highland Park. Dave was remarried to Dorothy Thatcher in 1986, and became stepfather to Dorothy, Robert, Susan, Barbara, Lorlyn, Stephen, and David. 

Dave was a life-long tinkerer who loved to tackle any project and see it through to completion. He was a member of United Reformed Church and was especially dedicated to the ministry of the church through The Farm (Earthrise) just outside Frenchtown, New Jersey. There he and his family spent countless hours together clearing trails, fixing things in the house, sledding, and enjoying the goodness of God’s good earth. 

Dave died at home on November 26, 2019. He leaves behind his sister, Nancy Ruff DeWeese of Bethany Beach, DE, his stepchildren Dorothy A. Munoz, Robert M. Thatcher, Susan L. Lausterer, Lorlyn M. Reedy, Stephen E. Thatcher, David B. Thatcher, his children, Karen R. Noll, Philip Ruff, and Judith Ruff, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Dorothy J. Thatcher, his parents, Josephine and Lowell H. Ruff, his brother, Lowell H. Ruff, Jr., his stepdaughter, Barbara J. Sackie.  May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Ralph S. Nalepka Sr., 76, of Manville, NJ, died peacefully surrounded by his family on December 12th, 2019. Ralph Sr. is survived by his wife, Sandra, of 56 years, sons Ralph Jr. (wife Christine) and John (wife Kim), two loving grandchildren Trevor and Corey, nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by parents John and Mary Nalepka and brothers John and Richard.

Ralph Sr. was a hard-working man: Coca-Cola (13 years); owner of Millstone Sport Shop (38 years); most recently NVGC. Ralph Sr. combined his love of family and the outdoors, often bringing folks out with him to fish, hunt and explore the outdoors. Ralph met and made many friends during his working years and left a profound impact on the community.

Ralph's legacy will be celebrated Sunday, December 15 from 2-5pm at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somerville followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 16 at 12pm at St. Joseph Church, 34 Yorktown Road, (Millstone) Hillsborough, NJ. 

​In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that those who knew Ralph donate to St. Jude's Children Hospital in Ralph's name.

Betty M. Condo

Betty M. Condo, 92, of Manasquan, NJ, passed away on December 15, 2019, with her loving husband of 71 years, Ralph Condo, by her side.

She was born to the late Harry and Louise MacQuaide, March 10, 1927 in West Orange, NJ. During the summers she and her parents and late brother, Bobby, would escape the city and spend summers at their family farm in Neshanic Station, NJ, until the family moved to the farm in 1936.
 
Betty graduated from Somerville High School in Somerville, NJ. After her graduation and as befitting her beauty and farm roots, she won a beauty contest sponsored by WOR Radio and was crowned The Farmers Daughter.
 
She married Ralph Condo in 1948, and their first child, a son, James Robert, was born in 1952. Their daughter, Carol Louise, was born in 1954, and their daughter, Lisa Ann (who predeceased  Betty in 2014), followed in 1956. Betty is survived by her husband, Ralph, their son, James R Condo (Diane L. Silver) of Phoenix, AZ and their daughter, Carol L. Cairns (Thomas Cairns) Mill Spring, NC, along with grand children Nathan Chilson and Michele Chilson (Lisas son and daughter) and four great grandchildren (Brandon, Lauren, Karly and Kendall). Lisas third child, Clifford, also predeceased Betty in 2014. Betty was affectionately known as Grammy Love” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
 
Betty was a loving wife and mother with an insatiable curiosity for learning. She made reading a priority for her children and filled the family home with books, subscriptions to Readers Digest and National Geographic, and even an early edition of the World Book Encyclopedia. 
 
Travel and new experiences were two of her favorite passions. She introduced her children to her passion for travel with an epic family two week road trip across the United States. And she made sure her children experienced the 1964 World Fair and a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view a visiting exhibition of Leonardo DaVincis painting Mona Lisa. In their later years, she and Ralph travelled extensively throughout Europe, returning most often to France and Italy.
 
No matter how far she roamed, though, Bettys heart remained with the beach at Manasquan, NJ and the Jersey Shore. The beach house in Manasquan was a cherished gathering spot for family and friends. After her family, she loved nothing more than gazing at the ever changing moods of the ocean.
 
Betty was immensely proud of her family and leaves them with beautiful memories.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019, from 10:30 am - Noon at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ. Graveside Services will follow at 12:45 pm in the Neshanic Cemetery, 688 Amwell Road, Hillsborough, NJ.

Patricia A. Pilato, born August 20, 1944 to John Johnson and Ella Tietzjen, passed away on December 20, 2019 surrounded by her family.

Before retiring. Pat worked at United Supply Co. in North Plainfield where she was an innovator, starting the first Kitchen and Bath showroom. Prior to that she attended Kean College,majoring in Special Education. She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church and taught religious education there for many years.

Pat was full of life and enjoyed every moment of it. She loved flowers,birds and dining out. She travelled extensively with her husband throughout the U.S. on the back of his Harley and also visited parts of Europe and Japan. She is survived by her husband Wayne, a daughter Judy Ulassin and her husband David, her son Jon Pieja and his wife Melissa and her grandchildren Nick, Jon, Catherine, Jack, Ben and Eva.

​Visiting hours from 5pm-8pm on Friday, December 27, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Saturday, December 28, at the Holy Trinity Church, 60 Maple St., Bridgewater. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bridgewater.

 Theresa Lillian MacGillivray (age 91) passed into eternal life on January 1, 2020 with family by her side. Theresa (Nanny/Terry) born on Prince Edward Island, Canada to James and Mary (O’Brien) Aylward, and raised on the family farm, lived in New Jersey for the last 62 years
Her life was filled by faith, family and friends. She enjoyed card playing, dancing, gardening and laughter. Retired from Baker and TaylorShe was an accomplished home cook and a supporter of local food pantries. Theresa was a generous and loving Mother, Aunt, Grand and Great Grandmother who would do anything for her family and friends.
Surviving are her daughters Ann Louise Reuben (Ron), Susan Salotti (Don); her sons Donald (Kathy), Richard and Ronald(Kathleen)her grandchildren Erin Vaive (Ron), Heather, Caroline and Elizabeth MacGillivray, Mark and Donald Salotti (Mandy); her great granddaughter Rylee Vaive; and many nieces and nephewsShe is predeceased by grandson, James; husband, Angus and her three sisters and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Saturday, January 4, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Interment will take place at a later date on Prince Edward Island

Florence J. Coyle, wife of the late Robert Coyle who died in 1999, died January 6 at the University Medical Ctr. of Princeton at Plainsboro,NJ. Mrs. Coyle was born in Union City, NJ resided in Martinsville for over 30 years and then Barneget,NJ before moving to Monroe Township recently to live with her daughter Lynda Smythe. A former member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Surviving are her daughters Lynda Smythe and Kathleen Holland and her son Robert Coyle,  2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Friday, January 10, at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Martinsville. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Basking Ridge.
