Margaret Mary Mulrooney (née Sullivan) of Somerville, NJ passed away peacefully on the beautiful spring morning of April 22, 2020.

Margaret was born into a large Irish Catholic family on May 12, 1930. She grew up on a small farm in the village of Woodford, County Galway, Ireland. At 19 years old, she immigrated to New York City, arriving by ship. She came to live with her relatives, Nanny and Pop Williams, and navigated her new life in the big city. She was eager to learn and completed her high school diploma through the night school program at Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, NY. Margaret found places in Brooklyn and the Catskills that had Irish dancing, one of her favorite pastimes. It was through this passion that she found the love of her life, Joe Mulrooney. Later, they were married on October 1, 1955 and spent 63 more happy years together. Their commitment, love, and devotion to family helped them raise four beautiful children in Somerville.

We will always remember her easy laughter, loving smile, and the twinkle in her eye as she shared many colorful memories from her life. Margaret loved to be outdoors gardening, taking afternoon walks, and spending time with animals. Even as she lived with progressing dementia over the past few years, being outside always brought a sense of serenity to Margaret.

Margaret lived her life with a strong faith and special devotion to the Blessed Mother. She found great solace in prayer and shared her faith with all who knew her.

Our family takes comfort knowing that Margaret is now resting in peace with her husband Joe, all of her siblings, parents, cousin Nora, good friend Kay, and numerous others whom we imagine her reuniting with in heaven.

Margaret is survived by her son Patrick and his wife Elaine, daughter Anne and her husband Dave, daughter Cathy and her husband John, son Charlie and his wife Maryann, her grandchildren, Molly and her husband Reid, Patrick and his fiancé Yanelis, Brianna, Megan, Chip, Claire, and her great-grandson Ellis.

In remembrance of Margaret, and in lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP), 87 E High St, Somerville, NJ 08876 (or http://ship908.com/).

Due to the pandemic, Margaret will be interred next to her husband Joe at the Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge, NJ. A memorial Mass will be announced later.

Since we cannot be together at this time to celebrate her life, we invite you to remember Margaret fondly for the wonderful woman we were blessed to have known as Mom, Grandma, Aunt Margaret, and friend.

In the words of one of her favorite songs:
When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing...

My Grandma, Sophie Billey
My Grandma passed away at 90 years old! Her name was Sophia (Sophie for short) I always wanted to name one of my daughters after her, but she wouldn’t let me!
She was a pistol for sure! She always told me “grass doesn’t grow under my feet!”
She was beautiful, a cheerleader, most witty and peppiest in high school!
I always loved visiting with her in the summers and at Christmas! I loved her stories about her younger years, how she met my Grandpa, and going “down the shore”!
She always made sure she made potato salad for me when she knew I was coming!!
She was an avid bridge player and tried to teach me🤪.
I was her only granddaughter so she spoiled me a lot She was the best Grandma a girl could ask for!  I am so glad I was able to spend so many years with her!  I am so glad she was able to meet my kids and have a relationship with them!  What a lucky lady she was and I’m glad I was a part of her life!
Basically she was the cutest little Italian lady you could meet!! I’m sad I didn’t get to say goodbye, but I know she’s watching over me (or playing a bridge game in heaven) right now!!
I love you Grandma,
Katie

If Roses Grow in Heaven
By Dolores M. Garcia

If roses grow in heaven,
Lord please pick a bunch for me,
Place them in my Mother’s arms
and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for awhile.

Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there’s an ache within my heart
that will never go away.

Andrew C. Bourke, Sr., 95, member of “Greatest Generation”

Andrew C. Bourke of Somerville, NJ passed away peacefully at Morris View Health Center
in Morris Plains, NJ, on May 11. He was 95.

“Andy” was born on August 2, 1924 and grew up in Somerville, where as a boy he was an
altar server at Church of the Immaculate Conception, was active in Boy Scouts, and
participated in the school music program as a drummer. He graduated from Somerville High
School with the class of 1941. During World War II, he served in the First Air Force of the
U.S. Army Air Forces as a crew chief of P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes in a combat crew
training station. As the war drew to a close in Europe, his unit was involved in a
redeployment exercise, receiving heavy bombers from Europe and preparing them for
shipment to the west coast and further service in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. For this
effort, the unit received a Presidential Citation.

After the war he attended Rider College, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in secondary
education in 1950. Shortly after graduation, Andy moved to Wappingers Falls, NY where he
began his teaching career at Wappingers Central High School. It was in this new hometown
that he met the love of his life, Regina Lyons, and they were married at St. Mary’s Church in
Wappingers Falls on January 19, 1952. Their marriage would last 61 beautiful years. They
had three children: Andy Jr., Ann Marie, and Jim.

While teaching, Andy attended New York University in the evenings, earning his MBA with
a focus in Public School Administration. He was employed in that capacity in several New
York State public school districts, returning to New Jersey in 1980 to complete his career as
Business Administrator of Pequannock Township public schools in Morris County. Active
in various education associations throughout his career, Andy was president of the New York
State Association of School Business Officials during the school year 1969-70. He retired
from his 37-year career in education in 1987.

Interested and active in community affairs, he had been a member of the West End Hose
Company of the Somerville Fire Department since 1946, one of the first two men to join the
company after the war. He was a line officer in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and was
elected treasurer of the company in the early 1980’s, a position he held for more than ten
years. With a continuing interest in public education, Andy became a member of the
Somerville Board of Education in the early 1990s. Twice elected president of the board, he
was active in the planning process for several facilities’ improvement and expansion
programs at that time. He was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in
Somerville, where he served as an usher for more than 35 years, and also was a member of
the parish finance council. After retiring from his career in education in 1987, he served as
an assistant funeral director at the Cusick and Hillsborough funeral homes for more than 20
years. He was active in the Somerville Elks Lodge, and also participated in several parade
bands as a bass drummer.

In 2018, he moved to the New Jersey Firemen’s Home in Boonton, where he was in the
company of other esteemed firefighters. One of his greatest joys during retirement was spending time with his grandchildren, both of whom are involved with scouting; he was
especially proud to see his grandson, Matthew, earn the rank of Eagle Scout in 2019.
