Manasquan
Ralph V. Condo, 96, of Manasquan, NJ, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on
August 15, 2021, following a brief illness.
Ralph was born to the late Ralph and Elizabeth (“Minnie”) Condo on February 21, 1925 in Somerville, NJ. He was the youngest of three children. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Claudia Pascale and Veronica Manovill.
He graduated from Somerville High School in Somerville, NJand while a student there he met the love of his life and future wife, Betty Louise MacQuaide. Ralph proudly served in the US Navy during World War II as a radarman first class on the USS Bunker Hill, an aircraft carrier stationed in the Pacific.
Ralph married Betty in 1948, and their first child, a son, James Robert, was born in 1952. Their daughter, Carol Louise, was born in 1954, and their daughter, Lisa Ann (who predeceased Betty and Ralph in 2014), followed in 1956.Ralph and Betty were happily married for 71 years until Betty passed away in 2019.
Ralph followed his father and grandfather into the family business, James Condo & Son, and he enjoyed a long and successful career in the building supply business before retiring.
Ralph is survived by his son, James R Condo (Diane L. Silver) of Phoenix, AZ and his daughter, Carol L. Cairns (Thomas Cairns) Mill Spring, NC, along with grand children Nathan Chilson and Michele Chilson (Lisa’s son and daughter) and four great grandchildren (Brandon, Lauren, Karly and Kendall). Lisa’s third child, Clifford, also predeceased Ralph and Betty in 2014.
Ralph and Betty traveled widely throughout Europe in their later years, returning most often to Italy and France. But, no matter how far they roamed, their hearts remained with their beach house in Manasquan, NJ. When the beach house was damaged extensively in Superstorm Sandy, Ralph was one of the very first persons to get a permit to rebuild from the Borough of Manasquan. Unlike later permitting requirements, Dad’s permit was based on plans that he drew on a single sheet of paper.
The beach house in Manasquan was a small cottage, but it was filled with love and laughter. It was a cherished gathering spot for family and friends and often hosted overnight guests in the basement apartment that Ralph designed and built.
Ralph enjoyed tinkering with and fixing broken household items, like vacuums, fans and furniture. His small workshop at the beach held a supply of every imaginable item that he might need for whatever fix-it challenge that he faced. He could also often be found tending to his beach house “garden” of pots which would burst forth with flowers and and a bounty of home grown vegetables that he often shared with neighbors and friends.
Ralph loved and was immensely proud of his family and leaves them with beautiful memories.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021, from 10:00am - 11:30 am at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ. The burial will follow at 12:00 pm in the Neshanic Cemetery, 688 Amwell Road, Hillsborough, NJ.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of sending flowers people make donations in support of their favorite charity.
